Convert UK bank statements to Excel or CSV
UK banks usually let you export recent transactions as CSV, but statements for past periods come as PDFs. BankConv converts those PDF statements into Excel, CSV or Google Sheets, with one row per transaction, ready to import into Xero, Sage, FreeAgent or QuickBooks.

How UK bank statements work
Most UK banks offer a CSV export of recent transactions from online banking, and monthly or quarterly statements as PDF. A few also offer OFX or QIF downloads for older finance software.
- CSV downloads: handy for recent months, but the date range is usually limited and the columns differ by bank.
- PDF statements: the record your accountant, HMRC enquiry or mortgage lender expects. Older periods are often only available this way.
- App-only banks: Monzo, Starling and Revolut generate statements on demand as PDF or CSV for a chosen period.
Software used in the UK
Xero, QuickBooks, Sage and FreeAgent cover most small businesses and sole traders. With Making Tax Digital, bookkeeping software has become standard. All four accept a CSV with date, description and amount. See importing into Xero and importing into QuickBooks for worked mappings; Sage and FreeAgent follow the same pattern.
What to check when converting
UK statements are day first and usually show money in and out in separate columns.
| Check | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Date order | DD/MM/YYYY. US-set software may read 03/04 as 4 March |
| Columns | Paid in / Paid out, or Money in / Money out |
| Balance markers | Some banks add CR or DR next to the balance |
| Brought forward | The first line may be a balance brought forward, not a transaction |
| Currency | £ amounts; Revolut and other multi-currency accounts list each currency separately |
After converting, check the totals yourself. Opening balance + paid in − paid out should equal the closing balance. Then download Excel, CSV or Google Sheets.

United Kingdom bank statement questions
How far back can I download a CSV from my UK bank?
It varies by bank and account, and is often limited to recent months. For older periods, download the PDF statements and convert them.
Can I import the converted file into Xero?
Yes. Download CSV from BankConv and use Xero's bank statement import, mapping date, description and amount. BankConv does not produce a Xero-specific file.
Does BankConv handle Paid in and Paid out columns?
Yes. You get the columns printed on the statement. Check that paid out amounts end up as negatives or in their own column before importing.
