Five things to do with a bank statement in Excel

Once the rows are in a workbook, these are the jobs people usually do next.

  1. 1Turn the range into a table (Ctrl+T) so filters and totals follow new rows.
  2. 2Dates keep the format the bank printed. If Excel treats them as text, select the column and use Data → Text to Columns → Date (DMY or MDY) to turn them into real dates.
  3. 3Build a pivot table: Insert → PivotTable, Description in Rows, Amount in Values (Sum), then sort to see your biggest payees. Add a Month column with =TEXT(A2,"yyyy-mm") to split it by month.
  4. 4Use SUMIFS on the amount column to split money in and money out for a tax return.
  5. 5To combine a year of statements from the same bank, save each converted file in one folder and use Data → Get Data → From File → From Folder to stack them into one table.

Excel questions

Can I open the file in Excel for Mac or Excel Online?

Yes. The download is a standard .xlsx workbook that opens in Excel for Windows, Excel for Mac, Excel Online, Numbers and LibreOffice.

Can I convert a bank statement to Excel for free?

Yes, for short statements. The first 5 pages convert free with no signup and no card. A free account lets you download the .xlsx and adds 5 free pages a day. Longer statements cost from $2.99 each ($2.99 for up to 10 pages, then $0.20 a page), or from $19.00 a month on a yearly plan.

Will it work with my bank?

BankConv works with statements from 1,000+ banks. It reads the table on the page, so most text-based and scanned PDF statements convert.

Does BankConv change the transaction descriptions?

No. Each description is kept as the statement prints it, so you can match it against invoices, receipts or your own payee list.

Can I convert a password-protected statement to Excel?

Yes. Enter the PDF password when the converter asks for it; it is used to open the file.
