Convert Commonwealth Bank (CommBank) statements to Excel or CSV
CommBank balances end in CR or DR, so the balance column needs turning into signed numbers before any maths. NetBank's CSV export covers recent transactions only and usually has no header row. For older periods, download the PDF statements from NetBank or the CommBank app and convert them to Excel, CSV or Google Sheets in BankConv.

What to know about Commonwealth Bank (CommBank) PDFs
- Balances end in CR or DR
- The balance column usually shows a suffix, such as $1,250.40 CR for money in the account. DR means overdrawn. Convert these to positive and negative numbers before you do any maths.
- Dates without a year
- Transaction dates usually print as day and short month (for example 03 Mar). The year comes from the statement period, which often runs for several months or across a financial year.
- Opening and closing balance rows
- The table usually begins with an OPENING BALANCE row and ends with a CLOSING BALANCE row. Exclude them when you total debits and credits.
Converting CommBank statements
CommBank statements from NetBank are usually text-based PDFs, so the transactions read straight off the page. Statement periods are often longer than a month, so a single PDF can run to several pages.
- Download the statement PDFs from NetBank.
- Upload them to BankConv.
- Check the rows, then export Excel, CSV or Google Sheets.
Turning CR and DR into numbers
Spreadsheets and accounting software need a plain signed number. Fix the balance column once and the rest of the checks are easy.
- In Excel, use =IF(RIGHT(E2,2)=“DR”,-1,1)*VALUE(SUBSTITUTE(SUBSTITUTE(SUBSTITUTE(E2,” CR”,“”),” DR”,“”),“$”,“”)).
- Check that the last balance matches the closing balance.
- Total debits and credits and compare them with the statement summary.
Australian dates are day first (DD/MM/YYYY), so set your spreadsheet or software to that format before importing, or 03/04 may become 4 March. For Xero or MYOB, import the CSV directly; see how to import a bank statement into Xero. For QuickBooks, see QuickBooks import.
