Convert a bank statement to OFX

Upload the PDF statement, check the rows, and download an .ofx file. Each transaction gets a date, a signed amount, a description and an ID, so QuickBooks Online, Xero, Sage and MYOB import it without the column mapping a CSV needs.

How to convert a PDF bank statement to OFX

Why convert to OFX

No column mapping
OFX names every field, so the import screen has nothing to match. Debit and credit columns are merged into one signed amount for you.
Same IDs every time
Each transaction carries an ID built from the account, date and amount. Export the same statement twice and the IDs match, so software that checks them can skip duplicates.
Checked before you download
If BankConv cannot tell which column is the date or the amount, it says so instead of handing you a broken file. CSV always works as a fallback.

What's in a BankConv OFX file

The file follows OFX 1.0.2, the SGML version that accounting software has read for years. These are the parts that matter when you import it.

  1. 1One account per file: the account number when the statement prints one, the statement's start and end dates, and the closing balance.
  2. 2Bank and savings accounts are written as bank statements; credit card statements are written as credit card statements, which some software imports into a different account type.
  3. 3Every transaction has a type (DEBIT or CREDIT), a posting date, a signed amount and an ID (FITID).
  4. 4The payee field holds the first 32 characters of the description, the limit most software uses. Longer descriptions are kept in full in the memo field.
  5. 5Opening-balance lines are left out: they are not transactions, and importing them would double-count money.
  6. 6The currency must be one the file can name with an ISO code (USD, GBP, EUR, AUD…). If the statement does not make it clear, BankConv stops and tells you rather than guessing.

OFX questions

Which software imports OFX?

QuickBooks Online (Upload from file), Xero (Import a statement), Sage Accounting and MYOB all import OFX, along with many personal finance apps. QuickBooks Desktop is the exception: its bank import needs a .QBO Web Connect file, which BankConv does not produce.

Is it free to convert a bank statement to OFX?

Yes, for short statements. The first 5 pages convert free with no signup, and a free account lets you download the file and adds 5 free pages a day. Longer statements cost from $2.99 each ($2.99 for up to 10 pages, then $0.20 a page), or from $19.00 a month on a yearly plan.

OFX or CSV: which should I download?

Download OFX when your software accepts it and you want to skip the column mapping. Download CSV when you want to read or edit the rows first, or when the software only takes CSV. You can download both from the same conversion.

Will importing the same statement twice create duplicates?

Each transaction has an ID that stays the same when you export the same statement again, so software that checks OFX IDs, such as QuickBooks Online, can recognise rows it already has. Still check the dates you import against what is already in the account.

What if BankConv says it cannot make an OFX file?

That happens when it cannot tell which column holds the dates or the amounts, or which currency the statement uses. The message says which. Download CSV instead, which always works, and if you need OFX build it with the free CSV to OFX tool, where you map the columns yourself.

Can I convert a credit card statement to OFX?

Yes. Credit card statements are written as credit card accounts in the OFX file, so import them into a credit card account in your software.

Can I rename the OFX file to .QBO for QuickBooks Desktop?

No. A Web Connect file carries Intuit-specific fields that QuickBooks Desktop checks, so a renamed file is rejected. The QuickBooks page explains the Desktop options.
