Convert HSBC UK statements to Excel or CSV
HSBC UK's transaction download stops at recent activity, which leaves the monthly PDF statements as the record for anything older. Convert those PDFs with BankConv to get Excel, CSV or Google Sheets that keeps the payment type codes beside each description. Wrapped two-line descriptions and the brought and carried forward lines are the parts worth checking.

Recent transactions only, and usually from online banking on a computer rather than the app. Past statement periods are PDF only.

What to know about HSBC UK PDFs
- Payment type codes sit next to the description
- Each line usually starts with a short code such as VIS (card payment), DD (direct debit), SO (standing order), BP (bill payment), CR (credit) or ATM. Keep the code in its own column; it's the quickest way to filter direct debits or card spend.
- Descriptions wrap over two lines
- Long payee details often run onto a second line with no amount. Check that these continuation lines join the transaction above and don't appear as empty rows.
- Brought and carried forward lines
- Every page usually starts with BALANCE BROUGHT FORWARD and ends with BALANCE CARRIED FORWARD, and the balance is printed after the last transaction of each day. Ignore the forward lines when you total paid out and paid in.
Converting HSBC UK statements
HSBC UK statements are usually text-based PDFs laid out in one clear table. The work is in keeping the payment type codes and joining wrapped descriptions.
- Download the monthly PDFs from Statements in online banking.
- Upload them to BankConv.
- Check the rows, then export Excel, CSV or Google Sheets.
What to check before you import
Compare the converted totals with the statement summary. HSBC prints a summary with opening balance, payments in, payments out and closing balance near the top of the first page.
- Sum Paid out and Paid in, leaving out brought and carried forward lines.
- Confirm the last balance matches the closing balance.
- Look for blank rows where a description wrapped.
HSBC business statements follow a similar layout. If you also bank with Barclays, the same checks apply. To bring the CSV into Xero, see how to import a bank statement into Xero. Files are deleted after 24 hours; see security.

HSBC UK statement questions
Can I download HSBC UK transactions as CSV?
For recent activity, usually yes, from the transaction list in online banking. For past statement periods HSBC gives you PDFs, which BankConv converts to CSV or Excel.
What do VIS, DD, SO and BP mean on an HSBC statement?
They're payment types. VIS is a Visa debit card payment, DD a direct debit, SO a standing order and BP a bill payment or transfer you set up.
My HSBC statement PDF is password-protected. Can I still convert it?
Yes. Enter the password when you upload. BankConv uses it once to open the file and never stores it.
