Convert Metro Bank statements to Excel or CSV

Metro Bank keeps statements back to account opening under Documents, then Account Statements, which makes it practical to convert years of history in batches. Its CSV export is only a transaction list without opening and closing balances, so for full months use the PDFs. BankConv converts them to Excel, CSV or Google Sheets.

  2. 2.Click the account, then Documents, then Account Statements.
  3. 3.Select the year, click View for the month you need, and download the PDF.
  4. 4.Repeat for each month.

Do you need to convert at all?

Metro Bank online banking lets you export a list of transactions to a CSV or PDF file.

The export is a transaction list, not the formatted statement with opening and closing balances. For full monthly statements, download the PDFs from Documents.

What to know about Metro Bank PDFs

Statements go back to account opening
Metro Bank says you can download PDFs of all your statements since you opened the account, and see transactions as far back as 2015. That makes it practical to convert a full history, but convert a few months from each year first, since older statements may use an older layout.
Money out and money in are separate
Debits and credits usually sit in two columns with no minus signs. Keep both, or build one signed amount (money in minus money out) before you import into software that wants a single Amount column.
Closing an account? Save the history first
Metro suggests downloading your transaction history from online banking before you close an account. Afterwards it keeps the history for at least 5 years and sends it as a printed copy, which you'd then need to scan.

Metro Bank statements downloaded from online banking are usually text-based PDFs. Because Metro keeps statements back to account opening, they also work well for converting years of history in batches.

How to get Metro Bank transactions as CSV

Which route you take depends on whether you need a quick list or full statements.

  1. Transaction list: use the export option in online banking to save the transactions as CSV.
  2. Monthly statements: go to Documents > Account Statements, save the PDFs, upload them to BankConv (up to 10 at a time), and export CSV or Excel.

Accountants and lenders usually want the statements, because they show the opening and closing balance for each period.

What to check after converting

Check each statement against its own balances before you import.

  • Balance: the opening balance plus money in minus money out should equal the closing balance.
  • Overlap: if you also used the CSV export, remove rows that appear in both files.
  • Dates: UK dates are day first, so make sure your software reads 05/09 as 5 September.

For Xero, see importing into Xero. More UK banks are on the UK banks page.
