Convert American Express statements to Excel or CSV

American Express lets you download the previous two years of transactions as Excel or CSV from your online account, so the PDF matters for anything older. Request archived billing statements from Statements & Activity, then let BankConv turn each PDF into Excel, CSV or Google Sheets. If the account has additional cards, charges come out grouped by card member.

Do you need to convert at all?

American Express says you can view your previous two years of transactions online and download them as a PDF, Excel or CSV file. Recent activity and the past six billing statements can also be downloaded for Quicken or QuickBooks, and the Year-End Summary comes in QuickBooks, Quicken, Excel, PDF and CSV formats.

The transaction download covers the previous two years. Older periods are available as PDF billing statements, including archived ones you request from the statement list.

What to know about American Express PDFs

Several card members on one statement
If the account has additional cards, the statement usually lists charges in separate blocks under each card member's name and card ending. Rows come out grouped by card member, so add a column for who made each charge before you sort by date.
Charges are positive, payments and credits negative
On a card statement a purchase raises what you owe, so charges usually print as positive amounts and payments and credits with a minus sign. If your books record card spending as negative, flip the sign of the whole amount column after export.
Older statements are archived
American Express says archived statements can be selected from the statement list and become available online within 24 hours. Plan for that delay when you need a full year of older statements for a tax return or audit.

A card statement saved from your Amex account is usually a text-based PDF, so the rows read without trouble. On a card statement the main checks are the sign of each amount and which card member each charge belongs to.

How to get American Express transactions as CSV

American Express covers recent history itself; older months come from the PDF billing statements.

  1. Last two years: open your transactions online, sort or filter them, and download as CSV or Excel.
  2. Older billing statements: go to Statements & Activity, select each statement (archived ones take up to a day to appear), upload the PDFs to BankConv (up to 10 at a time), and export CSV or Excel.

The PDF route also keeps the statement’s own totals, which is what an accountant or expense auditor will ask for.

What to check after converting

Use the summary American Express prints at the top of the statement to confirm the result.

  • New charges: total the positive amounts and compare with the new charges figure in the summary.
  • Payments and credits: total the negative amounts and compare with payments and credits in the summary.
  • Card members: on accounts with additional cards, confirm each block of charges is tagged with the right person, and that the per-member totals add up.

American Express statement questions

Can I download American Express transactions to Excel?

Yes, for the last two years. American Express lets you sort, filter and download that history as a PDF, Excel or CSV file from your online account. For older billing statements, save the PDFs and convert them in BankConv.

How far back can I get American Express statements?

Transactions from the previous two years can be viewed and downloaded online. Older billing statements are archived; select one from the statement list and American Express says it will be available online within 24 hours.

Why are payments negative in my converted Amex statement?

A card statement shows what you owe. Charges add to the balance and print as positive amounts, while payments and credits reduce it and print with a minus sign. Flip the sign in your spreadsheet if your software expects the opposite.
